How Compression Stockings Can Alleviate the Symptoms of Varicose Veins
If you want relief from the symptoms of your varicose veins, compression stockings can be a simple, yet effective way to decrease venous pressure. Compression stockings are a special type of knee-high or full length sock/stocking that are tight around the foot and become gradually less tight around the knee and upper thigh. The stockings help to drive blood back to the heart, thereby reducing swelling and the formation of blood clots.
Learn more about the benefits of compression stockings by talking to the medical team at San Diego Vascular Center. Our vascular surgeons specialize in treating varicose veins and use methods that are minimally invasive.
Are compression stockings safe?
When prescribed by an experienced doctor and worn correctly, compression stockings are very safe. There are no known complications associated with their usage. If compression stockings are used incorrectly, however, compression stockings can cut off blood flow. This usually occurs if patients purchase stockings that are too tight or patients do not properly wear them.
How to Use Compression Stockings
Usually, doctors recommend that compression stockings be worn all day and removed at night. If you have a difficult time wearing them all day, your medical provider may instruct that you begin by wearing them for a few hours and gradually build up to all day use.
To put on compression stockings, follow these steps:
Put your foot and heel into the stocking.
Slowly unroll the stocking over your leg.
Smooth out any wrinkles.
Make sure that stocking is two fingers below the knee.
If you are having trouble putting on compression stockings, it is often helpful to wear gloves to allow a better grip and to prevent snags. You can also use lotion, which keeps the leg slippery and allows the stocking to easily slide up your foot.
