How Do Spider Veins and Varicose Veins Occur?

Varicose Veins:

The veins in our body have multiple one-way valves that transport throughout the body. Varicose veins occur when one such one-way valve fails, causing a ‘reflux’ of blood in the channel which in turn results in that vein channel becoming unable to continue carrying blood to its destination. While there may be several factors behind why varicose veins occur, the most common cause is genetics. More than 50% of varicose vein sufferers indicate a family history.

Spider Veins:

Spider Veins occur when blood vessels begin to lose their elasticity, causing them to loose shape and widen. Spider veins are also genetic genetic, so there is little one can do in terms of prevention. Although they are completely superficial, they can sometimes be an indicator of a more deeply-rooted varicose vein issue. This is why, even for what seems to be a simple case of spider veins,  it is  absolutely critical to work with a vascular surgeon or vein specialist from the start.
