Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
Deep vein thrombosis, commonly known as DVT, is a blood clot that forms inside a vein. Most often, the clots will form in the larger veins of the thigh and lower leg, which blocks the blood flow and causes:
- Swelling
- Pain and tenderness
- Redness
- Warmth of skin
If you believe that you have deep vein thrombosis, then you need to get in touch with a vascular surgeon immediately. It is not possible to diagnosis DVT without an ultrasound, MRI, or CT scan, so talk to our board-certified vascular surgeons at San Diego Vascular as soon as possible to get tested.
Are you at risk of developing DVT?
While almost anyone can develop deep vein thrombosis, there are increased risk factors for persons over 60 and persons who travel for extended periods of time.
Other risk factors include:
Previous blood clots or family history of blood clots
Obesity
Cancer
Limited mobility
Recent surgical procedure or injury
Estrogen-based birth controls and hormone therapy
Preventing DVT
To prevent DVT, there a few steps you can take, such as:
Exercising your leg muscles
Stretching
Getting up and walking around as much as possible
Using compression stockings
Taking medication
