What are Spider Veins?
Varicose & Spider Vein Treatment in San Diego, CA
Spider veins and varicose veins often signify problems with vascular health. In order to better understand these symptoms of venous disease, it is important to understand the purpose and function of veins in your body. Healthy veins, for example, work by pumping blood back to the heart through valves that prevent blood from flowing in the opposite direction. When these valves become damaged or weakened, blood can pool inside the veins, creating pressure inside the veins that causes them to enlarge and become visible on the surface of the skin.
Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are thickened, elongated, twisted blood vessels that do not properly control blood circulation. When blood pumped through these damaged veins pools and collects, the veins can become overfilled and visible as small thread-like veins (spider veins) or, in some cases, as large ropey and grape-like clusters under the skin. They can cause pain, swelling, feelings of heaviness, cramping, numbness, weakness in the legs, itching or irritated rashes, and darkening of the skin.
Varicose veins visible on the legs can appear bulging and bluish in coloration. Individuals with varicose veins often find it difficult to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods of time and may also have difficulty participating in certain activities. Many people also tend to feel self-conscious about the appearance of their legs. When left untreated, varicose veins can become a serious medical condition with worsened symptoms such as blood clots, skin ulcerations, and bleeding.
Spider Veins
Spider veins commonly occur at the same time and in the same areas as varicose veins. They are small, superficial veins that appear close to the surface of the skin, are dark in color, and look web-like. Spider veins can affect all parts of the body, but are commonly found on the face and legs, including the upper thigh, areas around the knee joint, and ankles. Although they do not typically cause pain, they are a sign of problems with vascular health and a common source of self-consciousness and embarrassment. They can be easily treated using several various treatment options.
